Sustainability Zone
Sustainable living is living in a way in which we can continue to do so, as if we are going to live forever. At the moment, if everyone in the world lived like the average person in the UK, we would need three planet Earths to keep us all going.
Humans take natural resources from the earth to make everything from houses, to cars, to computers, but these resources won’t last forever. We are also throwing away more and more rubbish such as plastic, which can take hundreds of years to decompose.
Taking part in this zone is a scientist who makes sure companies are providing tap water that is safe to drink, a scientist helping to find ways to make our food system more healthy and sustainable, and a scientist looking at bacteria inside fish to help farmers. Another is studying how climate change impacts on the world’s icey regions, another is looking at how plants recognise and fight diseases, and another is helping builders make land that has been contaminated safe to use.
