It starts in the same way as a thunderstorm – warm moist air rising up, meeting colder dry air up above to form stormclouds. If there are strong winds up high, the clouds will start to swirl and rotate.
The rotating air can get very concentrated and form a tight spinning column – if this touches the ground then a tornado is born! Some are only a few metres wide, others can be a couple of miles.
Dionne has given a perfect answer, so I’ll just give you a little tornado fact! Very small tornadoes can appear in dry, sandy environments – and they are called dust devils! They’re usually harmless, but they look super cool.
