Hi guys. We think Earth (and the other planets) were made from dust and gas that was left over when the Sun was formed. The disc of dust and gas around the sun gradually began to merge into groups and form small lumps that gathered together (due to gravity) making bigger lumps, until things the size of planets formed. The Earth is still hot inside from when it was formed, and radioactive elements inside the Earth help to keep it hot – the bit we live on, the crust, cooled down, and the Earth’s gravity was large enough to hold onto some gases and liquids, meaning we have water and an atmosphere. (The moon is too small to have much of either of these).
