Tricky question, there are so many things that I’d be lost without! I’ll say the internet – I think the way it has made knowledge so accessible is pretty mind-blowing. We didn’t have internet at home until I was in high school, it’s hard to imagine going back to having to look up everything in textbooks and encyclopedias! Although because there is sooooo much information out there, it can be hard to know when to stop – it’s nice to switch off and read a real book now and then ๐
My first thought to this was the same as Dionne’s – the internet has completely transformed everything about the way we live our everyday lives. But, I’m super biased, so I’m going to say satellites! There are about 2,000 man-made satellites orbiting the Earth and providing us with all sorts of incredibly useful information – such as GPS (which tells you where you are and helps sat-navs work), communication and Earth observation. This last bit is what my science research is on!
I think video calling e.g. Skype/FaceTime
It is amazing that we can talk to someone at the other side of the world and even see them in real time. This is great for science because you can work with scientists all over the world and find out about all the cool things they are doing. I have learned that working together with other people and being a good team player is really important in science and other jobs.
Skype and FaceTime are also great for keeping in touch with friends and family. My best friend lives in Australia but I can still talk to her all the time. If I had to send her a letter it would take a long time to get there and cost a lot of money.
Google. You can literally found out anything on the internet because of it, you may not understand what you are looking at but if you know what to look for it’s a great way to expand your knowledge.
I’d have to say the car , then maybe the aeroplane โ I love being able to travel places and see new things and they let me do that. I cant imagine what it was like hundreds of years ago when it took days to get anywhere by horse and cart. We definitely need to make travelling greener though, so that it doesnโt affect the planet so much.
I really like crime/mystery type books – detectives who have to solve the clues to find out what happened! I guess it’s a bit like science really! Solving puzzles and finding answers.
Yes it’s very weird to think how much things have changed since then! And I’m only 33 years young… imagine how different things could be in another 30 years or so!
No smartphones when I was your age either, my first phone was the size of a brick, complete with an aerial!! Super cool ๐
Life as a kid without internet was great. The pressures to keep up with what are going on on social media are devastating, I find it hard enough and I’m 31. For a long time when I was a teenager we had dial-up internet, I think if that came back now people would just give up.
I love fantasy books, there’s a series called the Wheel of Time, it’s about 14 books and each one is about 800 pages long. It’s an epic read but worth it, but I’ll read pretty much anything to try and unwind, I read a book about WW2 recently and another one about a boy with autism and another one about David Attenborough. It’s good to not stick to just one thing.
Just recently we got a visit from someone called Marsali Taylor and she writes crime books that are based in Shetland. If you want to read her books they’re really good from what i heard!

I don’t know how you survived without the internet! It’s so weird how the internet has evolved in such a short time span!
