Fab question! You’re absolutely right – ice melting is raising the level of our oceans a lot. Animals aren’t the most impacted by rising sea-levels though, because they’re are very mobile (they can move away faster than the seas rise). However islands, cities and other important habitats will be flooded if seas carry on rising.

Ice is melting because the Earth is getting warmer. This is because of greenhouse gases that we add to the atmosphere, mostly from transport and making energy. So, to help stop the Earth warming any more, we need to use less energy and also change the way we generate it. You can help in your house! Turn off lightbulbs when you leave the room, put on a jumper instead of heating and walk instead of using the car for short journeys. It might feel like not very much, but the only way we can help solve the problem is working together and everyone doing their bit.

A really important way is to persuade our government and politicians to change the way our country is run. This includes how our electricity is made. Instead of using coal, oil or gas which emits carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases, we can use solar panels and wind farms which are renewable and sustainable. Making public transport better is also important – it’s much better if 100 people take 1 train than all driving individually to a location.
